Participants Conservation Toolbag

At each event the Intermountain Section AWWA will have a Water Week booth stocked with all the information shown above.  Also, we will be handing out Conservation Toolbags which participants will be able to check their in-home conservation practices.  Through checking for leaks, monitoring their showers and cutting down on the amount of water for each flush of the toilet we estimate that the participants will save over 100s Million Gallons per Year!  Now that is a real savings!

Leak Detection Dye Tablets

Nontoxic blue dye indicates within minutes if a simple repair can help save water. Just drop one tablet into the toilet tank.  Instructions printed on attached card.
Water Savings: up to 200 gallons per daya

Shower Flow Meter Bag

Helps determine the flow or showerheads and faucets.  Showers or faucets that flow at 2.5 gallons per minute are inefficient and can be easily replaced. A low flow shower head can reduce water usage by as much as 27.5 gallons for that same shower.  Instruction printed on the bag.
Water savings: up to 27.5 gallons per shower

Toilet Tank Water Saving Bank

Fill water displacement bag with water and simply hang in the toilet tank to save water with every flush.  Instructions printed on bag.
Water savings:  .8 gallons per flush  (Average households flush 5 times per day per person)

Estimated Possible Water Sav

The first program will be hosting Water Celebrations and Fairs throughout Utah at various venues.  The activities at each event will be varied with the goal to provide a publicoutreach program to engage diverse audiences to more fully appreciate local water resources and to celebrate the wonders of water.  Currently the group is considering irrigation education and training, family night in the gardens, picnic lunches with childrens’ activities, drought tolerant plant sales, landscaping demonstrations, water qualitysampling stations, and others.  The Section’s Young Professionals will be providing volunteers at the various locations at a Water Week Booth that will focus on:

Pharmaceuticals in Drinking Water - Contamination of water supplies by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are a growing area of concern among consumers and water utilities. Consumers learn what PPCPs are, how they get in the water, and why they are not considered a human health hazard at present.

Water Conservation – A Water Conservation Eco Kit for attendees to save water in their home.  The kit will contain a package of leak detection dye tablets with instructions, a toilet displacement tank bank, a shower flow rate bag, the AWWA pamphlet “A Consumer’s Guide to Water Conservation:  The Inside Story” and a report card to return to verify their water savings.  These will all be offered in a Water Week bag.

Backflow Prevention - Lets consumers know how to prevent backflow in their hoses and keep their families safe from dangerous fertilizers and weed killers.

These activities are currently being scheduled for:
